2017 EDU: The gamification of learning how to learn. Learn what you can do

The gamification of learning how to learn.
Learn what you can do
People can and do take charge of their own learning.  Many more could if they   knew how.  Here is a quick summary of how and a plan a self-instruction as a game.  And a suggestion about what game-based instruction teaches that other instruction leaves out.

The gamification of learning how to learn.

  • All games have a clear goal, and you can tell when you are on track
  • Many games have a series of goals, forming a path to winning.
  • Learning-how-to-learn has a series of goals forming a path to winning.
  • Winning in the learning-how-to-learn game means:
  • You can take charge of your own learning.
  • You can learn whatever you want to.
  • SERIOUS GAMES: WHY ARE THEY FLOURISHING?

Gate 1:  The treasure hunt: find the learning objectives

  • To take charge of your learning, you must set your own learning objectives.
  • Figure out what you want to be able to do.
  • Find a job description that uses those capabilities.
  • If the capabilities are in your own job description, you may be glad you have them.
  • Or you probably want to get them.
  • Be sure you understand what those capabilities allow you to do.
  • Do not accept abstractions.  Abstractions are for talking about something.
  • You can't do anything in the abstract.
  • Hint:  You are allowed use any and all internet resources.
  • Major source of job descriptions: Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Hint:  You are allowed to ask a librarian.

Gate 2:  Find the educational resources

  • Google search on that job.  How do people learn to do it?
  • The BLS can tell you pay rate, outlook, and educational requirements
  • A Google search on the capabilities will probably find instructional resources.
  • You can probably find online instruction.  But you need to evaluate that.
  • Here a librarian may be of great help.

Gate 3: Find the pieces.

  • Just like with a jigsaw puzzle, everything is made of pieces.
  • In school the pieces were neatly arranged in chapters, sections, and paragraphs.
  • To take charge of your own learning, you have to manage that for yourself.
  • Think of learning as getting skills.  The skills are the pieces.
  • Don't let anyone tell you you have to know something.
  • That translates into you have to convince somebody you know something.
  • In school you did that by taking a test.
  • In the world of work, you may have to explain what you know to an expert.
  • An expert has a reputation for knowing what you have to explain.
  • For most skills, you don't explain.  You just do something.
  • But you still have to convince them that you can do what they want.

Gate 4: organize the pieces

  • The units will be in some order.  That may be a good hint about where to start.
  • But don't take that sequence as a command.  You are in command.
  • Look over the units and decide where you want to start.

Gate 5:  Master a unit.

  • To master a unit you don't just read about it.
  • Maybe that worked in school.   In the real world, you have to do things.
  • Or at least convince a potential employer that you can do things.
  • So it is not really up to you to decide when you have mastered a unit.
  • You need to demonstrate that you can do what the objectives call for.
  • You may need to get certified to meet your objectives.
  • What is the best way for you to do that?  That's something else for you to learn.
  • The most convincing way to show what you can do is to produce a work sample.
  • Then you save your work sample to use in an effort to upgrade your employment.
  • Or, if you intend to be self-employed, to use it in your self-employment.
  • Self-employment?
  • Well, if you learn how to learn, maybe you will learn how to be self-employed.

Gate 6:  Master another unit.

  • Another unit?  Sure.
  • Just like other games.  Once you handle one challenge, you get another.
  • But you now have more skills.
  • And, more important, you have found out what you can do

Gate 7:  Master the other units

  • All of them?  Why not?  You already know how to master units.
  • And after you finish all of them, you can find something else to learn.
