The Military Open Simulator Enterprise Strategy (MOSES)

The Military Open Simulator Enterprise Strategy (MOSES), a virtual world research project funded by the United States Army Research Lab and supported by the University of Central Florida (UCF) since 2011, was transitioned to UCF as technical transfer in summer 2017. The Project was unique for its community outreach that had made virtual world content available through Creative Commons Licensing. Dr. Douglas Maxwell, MOSES’ founder from the Army and Michael Heilmann a UCF employee at the Institute for Simulation and Training (IST), led the support of building MOSES to study and promote training effectiveness for infantry soldiers. Both men took positions in industry in 2017 creating a knowledge gap for UCF to continue MOSES Community meetings. The Infinite Metaverse Alliance (IMA) has provided grid space for informal meetings for participating MOSES Community members who are forming emerging research and development aspirations.

Dr. Barbara Truman, a founding leader of online learning at UCF, has committed to lead the transferred MOSES project to seek future collaborative funding to serve the University’s strategic needs for continuing research, training, education and service.  UCF is a partnership university and an aspiring research university with a track record of working with government, academia, and industry.

The MOSES Military Metaverse website and wiki are currently available, but will be adapted over time as the transition evolves.

Dr. Brian Goldiez, Deputy Director & Research Associate Professor of the Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) said, “MOSES has been an excellent effort demonstrating how technology, learning science, and training can work together to produce communities of interest that benefit specific constituencies.  Accordingly, IST will continue to house and host the web server for the foreseeable future.  We look forward to this platform continue to gain support and will assess progress on a periodic basis.”
