2017 OSHG: IMA Conference Center on Kitely, draft design for a virtual world

IMA Conference Center on Kitely,
draft design for a virtual world
Rapid prototyping: A draft design for virtual world meetings of an organization (such as IMA) based on working groups.  These meetings are intended to be working meetings, so the design is intended to show and facilitate that.  Because this is done in a virtual world, this design can easily be modified without calling the carpenters and the movers.

Draft IMA Conference Center

  • Draft conference center?  You can't build a draft building!
  • Too expensive to build.  Too expensive to change.
  • You just build a building and live with it.
  • Unless you live in a virtual world.
  • In virtual worlds, we can do rapid prototyping on a building.
  • We let the computer do the heavy lifting.

This conference center is for working groups

  • A working group is people working together.
  • A WG conference center is for groups working together.
  • If one WG can't do it all, we need WGs working with other WGs.
  • The tables are for WGs or interest groups, which may be nascent WGs.
  • The green panels on some of the tables mark some possible interest groups.
  • The posters on the wall offer relevant information.

    Environment for working groups

    • Environment influences behavior.
    • So you want an environment that sets the tone for the meeting.
    • You want an environment that says "We are here to work together"
    • You don't want a recreational setting.
    • Or something that looks like the board room of Pompous, Inc.
    • You want something that looks like a place where people are at work.

    Center design

    • You don't want a roof. This is a virtual world.  We decide when it will rain.
    • You want people to look from above and see the table signs.
    • They can pick the table they want to be at and click on a seat or fly there.
    • They can also look around from above for another WG or interest group.
    • They can then contact someone at that table for a conversation in IM.

    Tables cluster and display interests

    • Tables are set up to bring together people with common interests.
    • Working group tables cluster members of working groups.
    • Interest tables cluster people by self-selected interest.
    • WG tables are set by the existing WGs
    • Interest tables are set in anticipation of need for WGs with the interests.
    • Note that the layout has no front and thus no implied leader.

    Walls can carry resources

    • You probably want walls to limit the view distance and the distractions.
    • You can put work-relevant things on the wall.
    • Informational signs, asset givers, web-senders, or MOAPs to useful pages.

    Permissions

    • WG members will have rez permissions.
    • If inworld groups have inworld groups, they may want group-owned parcels.

    TBD: To Be Determined

    • WGs may want to form their own inworld groups
    • If they do that, their table area could be a separate parcel.
    • They could then set the area to limit voice to that area or not.
    • They could also communicate in the group IM for group relevant messages.

    Use plans

    Instructions for seating

If you are in a WG, please sit at the table designated for that WG, so you can easily confer with other members of that group and so that people interested in contacting that group can find you.
    -
If you are not in a WG, please sit at a table for the interest area that best suits you. You will probably want to friend the other people at the table and talk to them in IM or IM conference about your common interests.

    -
If you are interested in joining an existing WG, find the WG table and contact someone there.

If your group wants to talk privately, take a voice-restricted (TBD) table in a corner. If you want, you can pick up a copy of the table sign and put it (temporarily) on the table you are using for a private conference.  If your group expects to do a lot of private talking her, IMA can create a private, voice-isolated parcel for your table.
    -
If you are in the IMA Conference Group, you should have rez rights here.  For things of public interest, best put them near the walls so everyone can see that they are public.  There is land available to you outside the walls for private building.  The IMA parcel is elevated a bit to designate it.

    Possible interest areas

These are interest areas, referring to people interested in these topics.
    • Promotion
    • Beginners (efforts to help beginners)
    • Funding (donations, payments, nonprofit support)
    • Communities (work with communities on promotion and their interests)
    • Educators (work with educators on their interests)
    • Web-worlds (work on development and links to opensim)
    • Testing (priorities, recruiting, organizing, specs)
    • Viewer (contacts with existing viewers, specs for OS viewer)
    • MOAP (identify problems, suggest solutions)
    • Hypergrid (identify problems, specify parameters, suggest solutions)
    • Halcyon (current state, road map, timelines, compare with osdev version)
    • OS Devs
    • World Languages
    • Business (identify needs, identify interested parties, investigate funding)
    • Physics
    • Scripting
    • Security (needs, current status, criteria to evaluate)
    • Languages
    • Events

    Meetings

    • Conferences will probably be monthly.
    • That is way too often for most conferences, but we are way faster than most.
    • At a monthly meeting, each WG will be expected to report.
    • Reports  include major action items taken and progress on current action items.
    • Other possible items: Significant problems, needs for help from other groups.
    • Meeting times will be varied to accommodate different time zones.
    • Or monthly conferences may be held in 2 or 3 sessions at zone-friendly times.
    • A summary will be gathered and published.
    • The summary will probably be prepared in notecard form by each WG.
    • The norecards would be sent to a designated secretary at the IMA table.
    • The secretary would copy them into a single document to go on the IMA site.
    • At some time, the WGa may want to section the conference:
    • Sections might be by time to accommodate world-wide time zones.
    • And/or sections might separately focus on Tech and Use plans.
