2017 HG: NEW: PEOPLE: Friend connections, IMs, and group memberships work over the hypergrid --part of the time

Friend connections, IMs, and group memberships
work over the hypergrid --most of the time
People coming into OpenSim grids from Second Life will find that most of the communication services they are used to are available, at least in the popular grids.  When they start using the Hypergrid, they wonder if the same services carry to the grids they go to.  Here are my findings about this.

-
This report is based on my extensive use of the Hypergrid with the Firestorm viewer and with Kitely as my home grid.  Kitely is a professionally managed commercial grid and its communications systems and features are similar to those in Second Life.
-
There are about 200 grids connected to the Hypergrid and each one is potentially different in the software it uses, especially in those features not part of the essential OpenSimulator software.  Your experience may vary depending on your home grid and the particular grids you visit.

Friend  connections and group invitations

Making these connections is most likely to work when you are both online at the same time and on the same simulator. That means in the same sim, varregion, or Kitely world. The friend connections always seem to work for me when both of us are in Kitely.  Usually they work when I am friending someone during Hypergrid travel.  I usually return to Kitely after a trip; when I do, I usually get a message (from Kitely) asking me to confirm the friend connections that I made on the trip.
-
I can see when my hypergrid friends are online (in Firestorm) and can send them instant messages.  IMs usually work when sent to someone online.  I am not confident that an IM will delivered if the person is offline, so I usually travel to the other person's grid and send a notecard to them.  I don't know that all grids where I have friends will save IMs and deliver them later.    I don't think most grids send IMs to email, although Kitely does if you want.
-
You need to have the person on your friends list to have a practical way of sending IMs to someone on another grid.   If you don't, you will probably have to go to the other grid and search for the person.   Search is well supported in Kitely,  but I don't know about other grids.
-
In Kitely, at least, people who arrive by Hypergrid can be in a Kitely group.   A person from the Hypergrid has the same powers in the group as a person from Kitely, as far as I can tell.
-
Hypergridders also communicate a lot on mainstream social media, especially Google+, Facebook, and Twitter.  This is easier, of course, because they work anywhere you can run a browser.  We have many Google+ communities.
