2017 HOBBIES: Sailing the virtual seas with Kayaker Magic and his advanced NAV

Sailing the virtual seas with Kayaker Magic
and his advanced NAV
Sailing the virtual seas is not as much fun as sailing the wet ones.  But the virtual seas are as near as your computer.  But a virtual boat costs only a few dollars and requires no upkeep.  Kayaker Magic makes sailboats that fit those strange terms that sailing fans use.   A bit of virtual sailing might be of interest to people who have limited access to wet-water sailing.

Hud= "Head-up" display.  head-up display or heads-up display, also known as a HUD, is any transparent display that presents data without requiring users to look away from their usual viewpoints.
-
In virtual worlds, the HUD appears on the screen with information about the local world and often with controls that you can use to take action about what you see.

Kayaker Magic explains what his HUD does

The NAV HUD is an advanced sailing HUD available for several of my newest sailing boats. It has all the same controls for your sailboat: Raising, lowering and trimming sails. All the modes and settings for your boat. But instead of separate compass and speedometer, this HUD has a large integrated NAV compass.
The NAV Compass starts off with a “Card Compass” that has a fixed needle in the middle and the compass rose rotates around it. The needle represents your boat while the letter or numbers at the top (closest to the bow of the needle) show your heading. There is a wind direction arrow on the NAV compass that turns with the card to show you the direction that wind is flowing over your boat.
The key component is a pair of red “in irons bars” that show you how close you can sail into the wind with your current speed, heading and sail trim. Also integrated into the NAV Compass is a pair of speed gauges for wind speed and boat speed. When your boat is in “internal wind” mode clicking on the face of the NAV compass will set the wind. Clicking close to the center selects calm wind, clicking near the edges sets the wind to a little over 20 knots. The location around the compass selects the wind direction.

Pre-made ready-to-use HUDs:

If you have my Catamaran or one of my Pirate Gunboats, I sell versions of the NAV HUD that you can just wear instead of the default HUD the boats come with. The new HUDs will connect up and you can sail away with the new instruments.

Sharing the HUD with others:

Several people can wear copies of the HUD at once that are connected to the same boat. The NAV HUD, like most of my HUDs, are COPY TRANS so you can give copies to your crew-members. (I highly recommend that you change them to NOTRANS before giving out copies). This allows your crew to control the sails or the gun (in the case of the Gunboat) while you concentrate on navigation.
The ability for several people to connect HUDs to the same boat also has a unique educational use: You can learn sailing from an expert by watching how they use the HUD. The in-irons bars are very helpful for teaching beginning sailors how to trim the sails to get the most out of the wind.
