2016 HG: Why and how would Second Lifers expand into the hypergrid? A hypertext presentation for virtual worlds

Why and how would Second Lifers expand into the hypergrid? A hypertext presentation for virtual worlds
A number of people in Second Life are also trying out the hypergrid.  Why would they want to do that?  How would they start?  The Non-Profit Commons asked me to answer these questions in a presentation.  To do that, I mixed virtual world presentation with blog presentation. Here is the result.

Key terms

Virtual world

A virtual world is a computer-simulated three dimensional environment populated by multiple users.  Each user is usually represented by an avatar, which is usually a graphic representation of a human, a creature or robot.  The multiple users can walk around in the virtual world and communicate with each other, usually in normal voice (wearing a headset with earphones and microphone).

OpenSim, OpenSimulator

These terms are used interchangeably.  OpenSimulator is a collection of open-source  software. that creates virtual worlds that are similar to the virtual worlds created by Second Life.  Open-source, however, means that the source code is available to the public and anyone is free to use it as is or modify it as they wish.  There are some restrictions on use, but basically anyone with enough technical expertise and/or patience can get their own copy and run it on their own machine.  Assuming they have a powerful machine, they can run multiple virtual worlds on their own machine.

Grids

People have used the OpenSimulator code to create grids open to the public.  A grid, in this case, is an interconnected collection of virtual worlds.  Some grids, such as Kitely, are commercial and charge for land and maintenance services they provide.  Other grids are maintained by individuals or groups for special purposes such as education, role playing, etc.   Interconnected means that avatars and the users behind them can generally move from one virtual world to another.  A specific virtual world is commonly called a sim, region, or world. This movement is called a teleport (TP) and is technically similar to loading one browser page in place of another.

Hypergrid

The Hypergrid is a set of conventions that allow communication between grids running OpenSim software.  The communication lets avatars and virtual objects move from one grid to another.  Many of the OpenSim grids are connected this way, so that people on the Hypergrid regularly visit multiple grids whenever they please.  From the user's standpoint, the collection of grids on the Hypergrid is much like one large grid.  (But travel methods are a little different-- LMs work as usual, but HG addresses need special handling.)

Why expand into the hypergrid?

Anybody

How do you start?

What similarities and differences can you expect?

    Does grid choice matter?

    No, for starting

    • Not for visiting, coming to meetings, looking around or minor building.
    • You can go to any grid on the hypergrid.
    • You can register on most of these grids (some may depend on HG entry).
    • You can register on several grids if you want and use any to travel the HG.
    • Sometimes, free parcels or apartments are available.
    • Rental land (with paypal payment) may also be available.
    • You can pack you stuff (if you made everything) and move to another grid.
    • (You may not be able to move stuff you bought.)

    Yes, for serious activity

Instructions for using web poster walks

    • The posters may show you a web page if your Preferences-graphics are set for that.
    • If a poster does not show a web page, click on its face.
    • Not all posters will show a web page at the same time.
    • Zoom in on a poster to read it. You should see a bar floating above the poster.
    • Click the rightmost symbol on the bar to open the webpage on your browser.
    • Click on the colored walkway to get a notecard about the unit.
    • The notecard carries web links to the web pages.
    • The entire walk, with posters and notecards should be free to copy.
