2015 EDU: Building and real estate commercials? Are you as smart as a 6th grader?

Building and real estate commercials?
Are you as smart as a 6th grader?
Students (6th graders) designed and built homes in a virtual world.  They then studied real estate commercials and used their observations to write commercials about the virtual homes they had built.  A video is presented to show the homes they designed.

6th graders at The Elisabeth Morrow School constructed their own "dream" house using OpenSim, hosted by JokaydiaGrid. All content was constructed by each student. Some graphics were imported to customize their home, furniture and appliances.
Students followed the building challenge by watching a variety of real estate commercials with an eye on what conventions were used to "sell" properties. They then created their own commercials to "sell" their houses. --Knowclue Kidd

YesButters:  Yes but it was just a computer game.
        -
Selby: Actually, it was the use of computer graphics for planning.    I checked the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to see about jobs in this area. Graphics designers made about  $44,150 annually in May 2012.
Graphic designers create visual concepts, by hand or using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. They develop the overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, and corporate reports.
YesButters: Yes, but what did they actually learn?
        -
Selby: They learned that they could use computers to help in planning things.  And they learned that they could--and would have to--plan things.
        -
Ed Jucator:  Planning things.  That is a life skill. Probably just right for sixth graders.  There should be a curriculum for life skills, like planning, problem solving, and how to learn new things.
        -
Caleb Orate:  And how to work in a team.  That's one of the things I like about virtual worlds.  You can get together with friends to work on a project.
        -
YesButters Yes, but they didn't work together in this project.
        -
Caleb Orate:  We don't know whether they did or not.  But we don't plan for the past, we plan for the future.   In the future, students will be working with other people.  The ones that have had practice at that will be ahead of the game.
        -
YesButters: Yes, but it is still just a game.
        -
TKR:  All life is a game.  It is just that in some games, it it harder to know the score.
