What criteria would a non-profit use 
to select OSHG projects to fund?  
The OSHG initiative aims to develop an organization that represents the open-sourced virtual world community and can raise contributions to support the further development of open-source virtual worlds. The initial focus is on software development.   To get support from 501C3 nonprofits, the open-sourced virtual worlds community needs to propose projects that show the expenditure is backed by due diligence.   This article describes the evidence that such nonprofits would need to demonstrate that.

These are the likely criteria for New Media Arts and other nonprofits: 

  • Cost fits to budget.
  • A way to determine that the project has met its goals.
  • High value to the OSHG community.
  • The place of the project on the overall roadmap of HG development.
  • Good prospects for successful completion.
  • Length of time the project will take to produce visible results.
  • Effect of the project on OSHG contribution to society.
  • Evident social good, like education and helping handicapped people.

The role OSHG Development Committee

  • Represent the interests and expertise of the OSHG community
  • Specify intermediate and long-term goals for OSHG.
  • Develop an overall plan (roadmap)  
  • Identify needed projects.  
  • Specify needed projects, including budget
  • Recommend contractors to execute funded projects
  • Evaluate contractor performance and recommend payment
  • Report on the effectiveness of the project in contributing to HG development
  • Other goals as selected by the committee.

  • OpenSource-Hypergrid does not refer to any specific software.  
  • OSHG community refers to people currently using the OpenSimulator software or something with similar functionality.
